Start with a better discovery call.

Five questions to ask before talking about price.

A useful discovery call starts with how a merchant runs their business. Use these prompts to understand their goals and decide what information to gather next.

1. How do customers pay today?

Ask about in-person, online, mobile and phone orders. Let the merchant describe a typical day before suggesting a solution.

2. What is working well?

Understand what they value about their current setup. A good proposal should preserve those strengths.

3. What slows your team down?

Explore practical friction such as checkout, reporting, reconciliation or support. Ask for a specific example.

4. What would a successful change look like?

Clarify priorities, timing, decision-makers and operational constraints. Avoid assuming that a lower headline rate is their only goal.

5. What should we review together?

Ask which statements, agreements or workflow details would help evaluate an offer. Use an approved secure process to obtain documents, and explain why they are needed.

Close with a clear next step.

Reflect the merchant’s priorities back to them. Agree on what you will review, what questions remain and when you will follow up. Avoid promising savings or terms before verifying the inputs.
